Why is it sometimes so hard to forgive? Is it because I’m too sensitive? Too much pain? Or is it because I was really wronged and the people who were suppose to protect me didn’t? Sadly, I was caught in a vicious cycle of hurt and unforgiveness but didn’t know how to get off that merry-go-round. If that’s you, I know how you feel.
As a little girl, I was taught the prayer The Our Father. When I was about 26 years old, those words “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive others” really struck a nerve. I knew I was in trouble. I was NOT able to forgive in my own strength. So one night when no one was looking, I knelt down at my bedside and prayed with all my heart, “Father, I know I need to forgive, but I need your help. I just can’t do it on my own.”
I’d like to tell you that a light shined from heaven into my heart and that an angel appeared to lift me out of that dark place. But no! None of that happened. It’s been a journey of faith with God surrendering to His will so He can transform me. If I let God, He can make me like Jesus through the gracious gift of His Holy Spirit. For I remind myself –
to be like Jesus – is to always forgive.
24 Therefore I say to you,
whatever things you ask when you pray,
believe that you receive them,
and you will have them.
25 “And whenever you stand praying,
if you have anything against anyone,
that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if you do not forgive,
neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Isn’t it fascinating that God says, “whatever you ask for in prayer believing – you will receive”? Then, the next thing God tells you is TO FORGIVE. That’s how important forgiveness is to God.
I don’t think God agreed with that bad thing that happened to you. I think He wants you to forgive for another reason. It’s not because the one who hurt you deserves to be forgiven. It’s because you are so valuable to Him that He wants you to be free of that sin! It’s why the Father God sent His son Jesus – so you can be washed clean and released from captivity to live life abundantly. Now that’s amazing grace!
So will you pray with me?
Please help me to release my hurts to you.
Come Lord and heal me
and make me whole.
Help me to take your next steps
in the right direction towards freedom.
Pave the way Lord.
Help me to always forgive
no matter what.
Help me to be
TO FORGIVE? Or NOT TO FORGIVE?
Now that IS the question…
but the answer should be a no-brainer!
