Have you ever seen anything like this?
When I was in Cologne, Germany, I saw hundreds of locks tightly secured on the Hohenzollernbrücke (bridge). Each lock had engravings with names and a date. As I checked into this recent phenomena, I learned that this isn’t happening just in Cologne – even the Brooklyn Bridge is infected. People are clipping padlocks or combination locks to the railings, or to brackets attached to the stone towers, especially the one on the Manhattan end of the bridge. So what’s up?
One report is that this crazy ritual started from a 2006 Italian movie based upon the novel “Ho Voglia di Te.” In the movie, a teenage couple is seen writing their names on an ordinary padlock and locking it with a chain around a lamppost. One day young couples all over in Italy began to imitate the practice on the Ponte Milvio bridge in Rome, throwing the keys into the Tiber in a gesture of undying love.
Another report is that this custom of “locking a padlock and throwing away the key” probably originated in China. But wherever it came from, it is becoming an international tradition all over the world!
Can you imagine doing this with your lover? It’s almost like saying your love is locked forever as you toss the key. But is it really? You can throw that key away, but God still knows where it is.
This is such a good visual of earthly love. There are so many things that can lock us to the love of this world – our money, our house, our career, our hobbies, pleasures – even good things like our family and our kids. But there is only one thing that will last forever……
His love for us – a heavenly bridge with an eternal lock that lasts.
“We love Him because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
So what is your love lock? Does He have the key to your heart? Or have you thrown it away?
