I have a reading palette for books that satisfy my spiritual hunger. So when I was assigned to read “living the SPIRIT FORMED LIFE” by Jack Hayford for the HMI Discipleship Program, I devoured it savoring every bite. Pastor Jack’s practical wisdom along with the depth and the simplicity of his writings is wonderful. Here he writes that the call to the normal Christian life has just three steps set forth in God’s word:
- To be Spirit-Born
- To be Spirit-Filled
- To be Spirit-Formed
Sounds easy, doesn’t it? While all Christians are born again by the Spirit, and while many are hopefully Spirit-filled with Jesus’ promise of receiving power, these are only the beginnings! I wonder can I ever become “Spirit formed”?
In his book, Pastor Jack teaches, “Being Spirit-formed is an abiding lifestyle that learns God’s grace but lives Christ’s laws.” Another word for being Spirit-formed is – a disciplined disciple. Then, he describes the 10 disciplines of the Spirit-formed disciple:
- Commiting to Hear God’s Voice
- Living in the Power of Baptism
- Celebrating the Lord’s Table
- Walking in the Spirit of Forgiveness
- Feeding on the Word of God
- Maintaing Integrity of Heart
- Abiding in the Fullness of the Spirit
- Living a Life of Submission
- Practicing Solitude
- Living as Worshipper
True to my self, I measured my progress with these thoughts, “How am I doing Lord? Are you pleased with me?” Oh, I’ve made some progress, but always fall short. Yet, even Pastor Jack talked about his shortcomings – an embarassing self-discovery of unforgiveness, a childish moment lacking integrity, and a busy life with seemingly no solitude. Thank you Pastor Jack for being so real. I am definitely not alone.
But this book is not about my inadequacies. It’s not about man’s Peter Principle where everyone rises to their level of incompetence. It’s about an all powerful God and His Pillar Principle.
Jesus said, “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of MY God, and he will not go from it anymore. (Rev. 3;12)
Pastor Jack wonderfully states, “God’s Pillar Principle declares – ‘I can and I will take those who put abiding faith in Me, and I will make them into dependable disciples – people who will prove to be strategic in My ongoing work of building My Church!’ ”
God has a simple program for developing me and you into dependable disciples. All that’s necessary is a simple faith in Jesus Christ and the power of the cross. His promise of creative power will take my life’s raw material and shape it into a pillar. Thanks God for making me a dependable disciple and pillar of your church! YEA GOD!
