Since summer has finally arrived, I am so ready to slip on my flipflops, romp around town, and play. At least, that’s my plan. Shouldn’t summertime be playtime for big kids too? I think yes, but of course, it must be relaxing and enjoyable too. Have you made your playtime plans for June and July yet?
Every year my husband and I buy tickets to Regency Park’s Summerfest concert series. With an 8 ticket package, we can hear the NC Symphony play outdoors for less than $20 a ticket, and kids 12 and under are free. We pack our chairs, make a picnic dinner with drinks and simply go. As always the NC Symphony has an amazing program of music, plus an instrument zoo and fireworks on certain nights. It’s that easy and that fun.
While I understand that not everyone happens to love the classical concerts especially with piano like my music man husband; I think you might be surprised at a few of the concerts purposely customized for a more contemporary palette. On June 18th, Tony Kishman, hailed as “the quintessential Paul McCartney,” lends his uncanny vocals to “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “Maybe I’m Amazed,” Beatles favorites and so much more. On July 9th you can come dressed like your favorite scallywag and hear some PIRATE selections from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, The Flying Dutchman, The Pirates of Penzance, and North Carolina singer/songwriter Laurelyn Dossett’s musical Bloody Blackbeard. How about a night of jazz, blues and bluegrass-infused musical mayhem on July 16th? Not bad as the daylight ends and the evening lights go on, don’t you think?
Well… it gets better. You can go for a FREE concert with FIREWORKS on July4th. Yes, I know it will be mobbed, but my friends tell me that a drive by early in the day to lay out your blankets and chairs will save yourself a good seat. If my husband didn’t hate crowds with such a passion, I think I would definitely brave it to toast to our Independence Day with this concert. Maybe I can even talk him into it this year?
P.S. Regency Park’s Koka Booth’s Amphitheatre also hosts an array of outdoor
events like movies, other types of outdoor concerts, and even Shakespeare.
Hope you will check it out for some more summer playtime options.
