It’s Stories of Hope Friday again… When I was about fifteen, a bad sinus infection coupled with post nasal drip left me with an inflamed sore throat and several sleepless nights. When my mom finally took me to the doctors, I’ll never forget this medicine man’s chastising words…..
“Young lady, you had better stop smoking. No one could have sinus problems like that unless they smoked. “
But the truth was that… I didn’t smoke!
Of course, he thought I was lying so that my mother wouldn’t find out. The prescribed antibiotic cleared up the infection, but those false accusations lingered in my soul. Sadly, I continued with recurring sinus complications because I lived with chain smokers, and unfortunately, it did affect my health.
Scroll ahead about ten years, but rescued from smokers in my home. One night, I found myself unable to sleep because of a killer sore throat. Crying with pain, I sighed, “Oh Jesus, would you p.l.e.a.s.e….. heal my sore throat?”
I wasn’t really expecting an answer, but all of a sudden… the pain wasn’t there. Was I healed? Or was this my imagination? I quickly sat up in bed and checked. Indeed, it was gone.
I believed it was a miracle; and so, I praised and thanked Him for it, and peacefully fell asleep. However, about two days later, the sore throat returned and I questioned this happenstance, “Lord, didn’t you heal me the other night? Why is this symptom returning?”
I sensed the Lord wanted me to continue praising and thanking Him. So I did, and you know what? The pain slowly floated away just like it did that first night, but about five days later, the sore throat came back. Again… I praised and thanked Him for healing and the pain left. Then a week went by, and the sore throat reappeared, and once again I praised and thanked it away.
Then two weeks, a month, two months, a year, and then several years….. Each time I remained healed for a longer time. Each time when the sore throat returned, I praised and thanked Him for healing, and each time it left. I can no longer remember the last time I had a sore throat. A mere coincidence?
Now I am not comparing an ailment like a simple sore throat to a severe life threatening or debilitating illness, but I think He was trying to teach me some lessons. After much thought, this is what I concluded:
-It’s OK to get real with God, and even if you’re not expecting, you can always ask.
-Start asking for the little things. It doesn’t have to be for healing, but it can be… if that’s what you need.
-When you ask God, make sure you praise and thank Him in advance.
-Recognize that praise and thankfulness changes you. God might want to change your attitude in this circumstance.
-Try your best to believe that God desires good things for you. Afterall, wouldn’t you want that for your own child?
-Even if you don’t receive immediate results, continue to knock on the door of His heart. The enemy would love for you to give up, but don’t give him that satisfaction.
So let’s open the conversation walk. Let’s get serious and talk…
Divine healing is such a tough subject to fully understand. Yet, I also believe that God uses doctors, nurses and medicines, and that He wants us to take good care of our bodies. I have many unanswered questions to ask Jesus someday, but in the meantime, I press on with faith that God still does heal today….. I know that it’s impossible to please God without faith, and that He is a rewarder to those who believe that He is God and those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6).
So what are your experiences with healing today? What questions or thoughts do you have on this subject?
