Welcome to my “Come Fly in 2017” Series! Each week I am going to review scripture about the beautiful identity we have in Christ. Well, that was my intention, but as you can see… it didn’t happen as I planned.
Have you ever laid plans and then felt bogged down with life? Busy with all kinds of things? Wondering where the days go? That has been my life since last November. I returned from Israel and haven’t stopped running. Then, right before Christmas, my young adult daughter returned home from Texas. Next, we celebrated her early graduation from high school, along with another new and challenging season of life which I won’t mention today. As if that wasn’t enough, I have been busy with various volunteer and training activities, including an upcoming missions trip to Mexico.
I had such plans for this year too. I thought I was just going to “take off” and fly…..
Oh well. Here I am, sitting on the ground. Seems like it’s a bummer, right? While I still hope to do my FLY Series, I must remind myself that it is OK. And in this process, I am learning to rest in Him – even in the midst of my personal struggles and problems.
Actually, resting can be a good thing. It can be a form of spiritual warfare. It shows God that you are trusting Him. It can bubble into joy if you let it. If you are like me, and your plans haven’t materialized as you dreamed, you might want to think about letting God take on a journey of rest… for He desires to show you (and me!) that we don’t have to work so darn hard. God will do the work for us, and we can just enjoy the ride.
Resting is His gift of grace, the favor of God without having to earn it. It doesn’t mean we sit around eating bon-bons all day binging on TV and social media, to take our minds off our stuff. It simply means that we are showing the devil that we are choosing to rejoice in God, refusing to get upset because plans didn’t go as expected. God has got it, whatever you need. He’s got you and me, and you know the cliche….He’s got the whole world in His hands. (haha!)
“… Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” – John 16:23-24
Beautifully Made Friends, we can rest in who our God is, knowing that we can ask and receive without worry, anxiety, or fear, regardless of our circumstances. So decide to have fun, laugh and play. Practice smiling again. Open your heart and let God fill it with joy. This summer my resting plans include the following….
- traveling to the mountains of NC to visit with my PRMI colleagues,
- enjoying various outdoor concerts with the NC Symphony and my local friends,
- venturing to Tizimin, Mexico with my church on my first formal missions trip,
- soaking up some sunny rays by my pool,
- chilling with my daughter at Pelican’s to slurp their fabulous snoballs,
- spontaneous hanging out with my besties doing whatever we feel like,
- visiting more friends and family in Maryland and Michigan.
- and intentionally breathing in the Holy Spirit celebrating every moment of life!
That will keep me joyful and refreshingly rested! Now it’s your turn. How are you going to take a vacation from your problems?
